An ingrown hair isn't caused by dry skin or sensitivity. It happens when a layer of dead skin cells forms over the follicle opening after waxing, and the new hair growing in can't push through it — so it curls back under the skin instead. The fix isn't a heavier moisturiser. It's managing that dead skin layer at the right time.

Why waxing specifically causes this

Waxing removes hair from the root, which is exactly why results last 3 to 6 weeks instead of the day or two you get from shaving. But pulling the hair out also disturbs the follicle opening, and in the days that follow, the skin's normal healing response can seal over that opening with a build-up of dead skin cells before the new hair has had a chance to break through cleanly.

The mistake most people make with exfoliation

Exfoliating right before a wax feels logical, but it strips away skin that's about to be freshly waxed anyway, leaving the area more reactive. The window that actually prevents ingrown hairs is 48 hours after your appointment, not before. Starting gentle exfoliation two days post-wax clears the dead skin build-up while the follicle opening is still fresh, before it has a chance to seal over.

Once you're in a regular waxing routine, keep exfoliating two to three times a week in between appointments — not just after each wax.

Why picking makes it worse, not better

Picking at an ingrown hair damages the surrounding skin and increases the risk of infection and scarring, and it rarely actually frees the trapped hair — it usually just aggravates the area further. If a hair is visibly trapped under the skin, gentle exfoliation and patience will resolve most cases within a week or two. Anything that isn't resolving, or that looks infected, is worth having a therapist look at rather than treating at home.

What actually prevents them long-term

Consistent waxing on a proper cycle matters more than any single aftercare product. Hair that's waxed regularly tends to grow back finer and straighter over time, which on its own reduces the odds of it curling back into the skin. Avoid tight clothing over freshly waxed areas for the first 24 to 48 hours, keep the area clean, and stick to the exfoliation window — that combination does more than any serum marketed specifically for ingrown hairs.
